Strangler Fig

The strangler fig is part of the fig family. In Spain the Strangler Fig is known as the Killer Tree. When monkeys and birds eat the fruit of the Strangler they spread the seeds making it easier for the fig to spread. Strangler figs grow as an epiphyte it sends down long roots that wrap themselves around the host tree eventually strangling it, leaving nothing but a hollow trunk of Strangler Fig.

Orchids

Orchids are one of the most varied of flowering plant families. There are over  20,000 species of orchids which are commonly found in Tropical Regions. Temperate orchids grow in the ground and tropical orchids often grow as epiphytes.

Epiphytes

Epiphytes also know as Air Plants are commonly found growing on trunks and branches of trees. The name Epiphyte comes from the Greek word 'epi' which means 'upon' and 'phyton' meaning 'plant'.

Buttress Roots

Did you know that rainforest soil  is very poor in nutrients. Rainforest trees have very shallow roots which means they are not very stable. Tall trees have found a way to keep themselves stable by forming Buttress Roots.  Buttress Roots grow out from the base of the trunk sometimes as high as 15ft above the ground.
