Some
people don't know it but our worlds rainforests are home to more than half of
the worlds animals including reptiles, mammals, birds and insects. Rainforests
contain as many as 125 species of mammals, 100 species of reptiles, 60 species
of amphibians and over 100 species of butterfly.
Mammals
In 15 square
kilometres of rainforest as many
as 100 different mammals can be found. These animals occupy every available
space from burrows, to the branches of the emergent layer. Most of the mammals
in the rainforest are nocturnal which means they spend their days in the
rainforest sleeping and only hunt or move
around at night. Some of the animals
that live in the rainforest are jaguars, gorillas, monkeys and cheetahs.
Insects
90 percent
of rainforest animals are insects, which are mostly beetles. However scientists
believe that the most fascinating of all the insects are the Leaf Cutter Ants.
Leaf Cutter Ants are remarkable because they actually cultivate their own food
using saliva. Among all these amazing insects scientists believe that they
have only discovered a small amount of the worlds insects.
